PACK MENTALITY: POWER IN UNITY
Painted dogs are one of Africa’s most successful apex predators, with a hunt success rate up to 80% — far higher than lions. Their edge? Discipline, teamwork, and an unshakable social bond
They live in matriarchal packs, where an alpha female leads the group, chooses the den site, and is the primary breeder. Every member plays a role, from hunting and scouting to babysitting the next generation. They eat together, travel together, and care for their sick and injured — a rare trait in the wild.
WHY THEY’RE DISAPPEARING
Despite their strength and loyalty, painted dogs are vanishing fast.
- Targeted & Misunderstood. Farmers often shoot or poison them, wrongly blaming them for livestock losses (usually caused by leopards or hyenas).
- Losing Ground. Habitat loss from farming, roads, and cities cuts off the huge spaces they need. Smaller, isolated packs can’t survive disease or pressure the way large ones can.
